How to read the result

Errors usually come from wrong prior credits, not the algebra.

Repeated-course policies can change quality points — ask counseling.

Educational orientation only — not an official transcript GPA. Schools and colleges may use different scales and recalculations.

  • Compare weighted vs unweighted views when you take advanced courses.
  • Colleges may ignore local weights — keep both numbers.
  • Use target planner if you have a goal GPA.

Next steps after you finish calculating

• Compute semester GPA first to get new quality points.
• Project remaining terms with the projected GPA tool.
• Verify against the school portal when grades finalize.

Mini-guide

Mini-guide: compute and sanity-check your GPA

Work from official grades, pick the correct scale (weighted vs unweighted), then verify credits before trusting any browser result.

The method notes below explain what the calculator includes, what it leaves out, and how to verify the result against your school records.

Steps

  1. Collect letters/percents and credits from the latest report card.
  2. Choose unweighted vs weighted per your handbook.
  3. Run the calculator and record quality points + credits.
  4. Update cumulative GPA after each official term.
  5. If aiming at a goal, use the target planner with remaining credits.

Checklist

  • Credits match the transcript
  • Course levels correct (Honors/AP)
  • Same scale across compared terms
  • Compared against portal GPA when available
ConceptRule of thumb
UnweightedΣ(points×credits)/credits on 4.0
WeightedAdd local rigor boosts, then average
CumulativeBlend prior QP with new term QP
College viewMay drop weights / limit to cores

Worked examples

Add one completed term

A prior 3.20 GPA over 20 credits represents 64 quality points. Add 18 new quality points over 5 credits: (64 + 18) ÷ 25 = 3.280.

Action: Calculate the new term first with the Semester GPA Calculator.

A strong term moves a mature GPA slowly

A 3.00 GPA over 30 credits plus a 4.00 term over 5 credits becomes (90 + 20) ÷ 35 = 3.143.

Action: Use the exact prior credit total shown by the transcript.

Half-credit courses

If a term contains four 0.5-credit courses with 14 total quality-point units before credit weighting, enter the final term quality points and 2.0 new credits, not four credits.

Action: Check whether the portal reports attempted or GPA-bearing credits.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing weighted and unweighted points

Keep scales consistent when updating cumulative GPA.

  • Ignoring credits

Half-credit courses should not count as full credits in credit-weighted systems.

  • Assuming colleges use local weights

Many admissions offices recalculate — report both weighted and unweighted when asked.

  • Linear conversion as “official” international GPA

Credential evaluators use course-by-course methods; linear maps are orientation only.

Special situations

  • Plus/minus schools: if your legend has no A-, use whole-letter maps only.
  • Repeated courses: some districts replace the grade; others average attempts.
  • Dual enrollment: may appear on both HS and college records with different rules.
